Designer Barry Dixon's Garden and Grounds
October
2011
By Rebecca Christian
Photography By Matthew Benson
Produced By Jeanne Blackburn “Whenever I get a case of ‘designer’s block,’ ” says interior designer Barry Dixon—shown above in a 1957 Chevy Nomad that was a gift from his late partner, Michael Schmidt—“I can coax Ellie, my wire-haired fox terrier, into a walk over hill and vale to the barn. By the time I’m back at my desk with a handful of thistle or a fruit-laden bow, the creative juices are flowing freely.”

Fortuny
Veranda, Barry Dixon, and a little Fortuny
September 22,
2011Is it any surprise that our good friend Barry Dixon is in the press once again? Featured in the October 2011 issue of Veranda, he describes a number of unique pieces from his collection. Barry works primarily from the Virginia countryside, but he is known for his cosmopolitan taste, and a global flavor is apparent from product to product. The top ten Barry Dixon products include pillows covered in Fortuny's Papiro fabric, utilizing the techniques of trapunto and quilting to add a sculpted, three dimensional structure, giving them more depth and adding another level to how our fabrics play with the light. We love the updated look!

Showhouse Rooms with Yellow Palettes
2011 Photographs by Gordon Beall
Produced by Eileen A. Deymier
Designer Barry Dixon listens to a room's visual suggestions before moving forward with a design. In this conservatory, an existing limestone fireplace and extraordinary garden views inspired him to create an earthy gray and stone palette. The hushed neutrals showcase the uncommonly pretty architectural details, including the paneling, moldings, and windows.

I never tire of the helios gamut of colors. Glowing ember golds, blood oranges, and muted, winey clarets fold into one another when used together. A room in these colors is warm even before we turn up the thermostat.

This past year I had the good fortune to spend several days with the enormously talented Barry Dixon. While I have long been an admirer of his work, I only first meet Barry and his charming partner Michael Schmidt earlier this year.

Tour of
Barry Dixon’s
Brain
May 1, 2010 By Jennifer
Since I could
never afford to hire Barry Dixon to decorate my own house, I
like to go hear him speak as often as possible, so his ideas
will make me smarter. Barry was at the Washington Design Center
the other day with Ann Maine, editor in chief of Traditional
Home magazine, where he talked about how people should work with
an interior designer.

And today we're off to St. Barts to visit this drop. dead. gorgeous. space designed by Barry Dixon, and captured so beautifully by photographer Edward Addeo. The inside is just incredible, love that loft! But I don't think I've ever seen an outdoor space I love as much as this one.
