"We planted extra Silver
Queen corn, our favorite variety, to share with friends and neighbors
this year. I like to soak the ears for a few hours in sugar water
and then grill them with husk on, shuck them, and roll them in butter
and sea salt. Delicious. We've also planted an extra row of sugar
snap peas. Sautéed, they make the best summer side dish.
Raw, they add crispness to salad. And blanched and served cold,
they're like and all-American version of edamame. My new favorite
garden staple, if you can believe it, is Savoy cabbage. I like to
drop one in a bowl with and inch of water to make a bold sculptural
centerpiece, then, after three or fours days, just chop it up for
coleslaw or summer stew."
